Thoughts on the Cold and a new tarot spread!

Texas.  Texas is a funny place when it comes to winter time and colder weather.  With less than 2 inches of snow/wintery mix on the ground schools and businesses and life in general have closed down for the entire week.  It is funny that just a few weeks ago my wife and I were talking about how we wish life were a little slower moving.  Well it looks like we got our wish.  Indoors for the last few days, not counting the daily walks with the dog or trip to a nearby grocery store, we have settled in to madness quite nicely.  Personally I prefer the short cool winters over the blazing hot never ending summer, but when the temp hovers in the teens and lower it really starts to get to me.  I remember growing up we had a quarter basket ball court in our back yard and every time the weather would threaten to snow or freeze we would go out late at night and spray it down with water.  It was our hope that a few Texas boys would be able to enjoy not only a day off from school but that we could have a home made hockey rink by morning.  The next day we would put on our warmest clothes, or actually just more of our everyday clothes, and head out to the back yard.  With gardening tools for hockey sticks and a tennis ball as a puck we would awkwardly slip around pretending to play hockey with the pros.  Only now am I old enough to realize this probably scared the hell out of our mother.  I can see her standing in the kitchen window looking out at the wintery scene and all of us falling down on the iced over concrete like a bunch of new born baby dear.  Now however I take the weatherman’s advice to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.  I did get two new mandolin books via mail right before the weather turned south, and have been enjoying sleeping late and taking long hot showers.  I wish I could count on the power to keep me entertained but the power company has been “balancing the system load” with rolling blackouts.  Thats right folks, in Texas they have to start turning off your power if it stays in the teens for more than a day.  With Imbolc here and March right around the corner I glad to see the snow, but I won’t miss it when its gone.

I am happy to introduce to you my latest creation, a new tarot spread which I have named “The Road Less Traveled”.  I will have it posted in the Tarot section along with a reading soon for myself using it for examples sake.  So here is the background on it…  Being self employed with no boss or set in stone schedule can be tough from time to time.  Lately I have found it difficult to find the motivation to pick myself up and go into the office to get some real work done.  I do have the luxury of working from home but I am never as productive when I do that.  I really needed motivation and was having a hard time finding it on my own so I turned to the Tarot.  Over a couple of weeks I started to think of a creative solution to find that motivation, or rather a way to explore the benefits to putting in a little extra hard work to get the job done.  What came out of that was this spread.

1:  This card represents your current situation.  You may be just starting the journey or may be well on the way to your destination but this describes the state of things.

2: This card represents how you arrived at your current situation or what “crosses” or affects the current situation.

3: This card represents your destination.  What is waiting for you when your goal is complete.  If you know what the goal is this card with tell us about it, if you are not sure about the destination this card offers a possible end and may reveal a goal you haven’t thought of yet.

4: This card is the easy way or path of least resistance.  It might very well lead to your original goal, but what of it effects?  Is the short cut always worth making up the time to an outcome?

5: This card is the road less traveled.  Is it full of heartache and hardships, or does it offer an rich experience more important than getting to the end of your journey?  I turned this card sideways to represent the fact that its harder to traverse and sometimes out of the way.

From using this spread I have seen some interesting insight.  Ultimately I am finding that inspiration I need to self motivate.  It has acted as a good reminder that it may be more effort and harder work to get to the same result but that I am better off and that sometimes I should focus on the how and not the what.

Tell me what you think! Blessed Be.

Knowledge, Wisdom, and Intelligence Part 3

When I started this series I was hoping for a very quick maybe even weekly posts going over the three subjects, but I learned something about myself and this time of year. For months I have been sapped and unfocused. When I started the blog that was really my prime. Fall through late Winter is where I really shine and feel the most “in control”. That aside, Lughnasadh is behind us and I feel that spiral becoming tighter. There is a returning to inner power and creativity that I see over the horizon and i wait… with open arms.

To catch Part One and Part Two of this series follow the links.

Intelligence

Is it simply just the ability to learn. That is the simplest definition I came across in my study. Interestingly it was a good starting point not because it summed up Intelligence well but because I raised a lot of questions that fueled my search for some understanding.

What are we learning? How do we do this? How is this Quantified? Is this a learn-able ability? Teachable even? Can Intelligence be made then or trained?

Carol Bainbridge on About.com defines Intelligence in this way:

  • Adaptability to a new environment or to changes in the current environment
  • Capacity for knowledge and the ability to acquire it
  • Capacity for reason and abstract thought
  • Ability to comprehend relationships
  • Ability to evaluate and judge
  • Capacity for original and productive thought

This is certainly a much more profound reach into intelligence. It is no easy subject to understand or to grasp as it is still beingstudied today. What I particularly like about the above definition is the parts about evaluation and original thought. Both of those put an interesting spin on what intelligence means. It really makes me think about how intelligence is tied to morality and polarity. To be able to sift through the information that is given certainly plays its part in intelligence. Being able to judge that information into appropriate categories is something that I had never thought about when it came to intelligence but gives some good food for thought. Capacity for Original thought almost seems to be like a contradiction. I first thought about this as comparing my thoughts to all thoughts ever thought throughout time. In this line of thinking Original thought hardly exists, because I can imagine that most everything that has popped into my mind has occurred in someone else as well at some point in history. I heard somewhere that over a person’s lifetime they will only ever have 3 original thoughts. When I was in High School I thought one of my originals was something I called Human Foosball. It was a scheme I had where giant hydrolic machine could be placed on a field as an amusement park ride. People would pay to be in the hydo-cages to spin around and hit the ball by other people who would pay to control the hydro-cages via remote. Now, till this day I am still not sure if this is a truly original thought but for me it was. Today this is where my focus on originality changes that maybe original thought is not about never before thought things but the ability to step outside your own collective thought processes to come up with something that is outside your own nature or normal thoughts. If that is the case then a person could have many original thoughts in their life, depending on their Intelligence or if they have the capacity for it.

I did find an interesting resource on intelligence and I urge anyone who wants to research it more tovisit www.aboutintelligence.co.uk/what-intelligence.html.

There psychologist Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences states that intelligence can be broken down into 8 distinct components: logical, spatial, linguistic, interpersonal, naturalist, kinesthetic, musical and intrapersonal. Thus he believes that standard IQ tests and psychometric tests focus on certain components, such as logical and linguistic, while completely ignoring other components which may be equally important. If IQ covers mathematical, spatial, verbal, logic and memory. What about emotional, which has a good deal to do when it comes to comprehending relationships?

One alternate type of intelligence often mentioned in popular media is ‘emotional intelligence’, developed by Daniel Goleman and several other researchers. This refers to an individual’s ability to understand and be aware of your own emotions, as well as those of people around you. This ability enables you to handle social interactions and relationships better.

The concept of emotional intelligence was first suggested by Charles Darwin who emphasised the importance of emotional expression in adaptation and survival.

So how can we apply this to our Magick.

Concisely put: Know your magick, apply what you know to benefit, and adapt that knowledge accordingly. Further more, always develop whatever set or level of intelligence you have. Adaptation, productive thought, relationships, how to use knowledge, are all things that can be trained as long as you have the capacity to do so.

When casting a circle, a spell, a hex, a wish, a hope, a dream, or a prayer… do so with intelligence. The kind of both the mind and heart. Blessed be.

What the Tarot says about Intelligence: A single card pull from the Tarot.

For this pull I used the Tarot Pro app on the IPhone. Check it out here.

The Chariot (Inv) – What good is done if intelligence is not shared? Intelligence, to be of benefit, must be used in conjunction with wisdom. It is also a reminder never to disregard, disrespect, or ignore the intelligence of another.

A Witch’s musings on Knowledge, Wisdom, and Intelligence

An Introduction

This is a post that has been on my mind for some time now.   Knowledge, Wisdom, and Intelligence: Are they interchangeable?  Equal to one another?  Additionally, what do they have to do with Magic and the Craft?  I want to take some time to write about each of them so I am going to make this a three part post.  Please keep in mind that these are musings, meaning that what I am going to write is mostly based of my own experience and from my own heart.  You may very well feel differently about these subjects then I, but I welcome our differences and would love to hear you thoughts in the comments section.  I am also going to share what affect these ideas have on magic and in Craft work.  Then I leave it up to the reader to share with me how these ideas affect their own magical work.

For me each of these stand out in their own way and each hold huge uniqueness over the others.

Knowledge

Walk with me on a path of exploration.  This place that we travel to is one of worship and learning.  It exists in all of us and at its very core holds the answers to all of our questions.  Take my hand and listen not only to the words that are spoken but also to your own heart.

I have found these three words in conversation quite often recently.  I start with knowledge because I believe that it deals with the base of our conversation.  Knowledge for the basis of our conversation is the micro.

As we start our journey we start the path at the opening of a great field of flowers.  With each step of your feet you are overcome.  You feel your mind filling with the information of your surroundings.  The names of the beautiful flowers flow through your consciousness , and close behind you feel their colors pass through you.  You can taste, and smell them all at once.  With each breath you gain even more then you thought was possible from the breath before it.  You stand in this field and know what it is that surrounds you.  As you gain an inner peace you feel a calm breeze that calms your spirit and lifts your heart.

Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines knowledge as “the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association.”  The word “know” is defined as “to perceive directly: have direct cognition of.”  When I myself tried to define what I consider knowledge the best I could come up with is ownership of true facts, abilities, or experiences.  I wanted to add abilities because I have the knowledge how to do certain things like play the guitar or swim, and I think that is different then facts and experience.

Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.   – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

It is important to separate information from knowledge.  Information is all around us it is not until we have some familiarity with it that we can consider it knowledge.  In my web searching to  research the subject I ran across this.  Check it out here http://www.tdan.com/view-articles/5108/, or read below:

Knowledge adds understanding and retention to information. It is the next natural progression after information. To have “knowledge” requires information in conjunction with patterns between data, information, and other knowledge, couples it with understanding and cognition.

I really like that as a definition as it really encompasses the idea between understanding and retention.  To know we have to get the information and then retain it.

Information is not knowledge. – Albert Einstein

So how can apply this to our Craft.  I found myself in my youth of witchcraft a real information whore.  I couldn’t get enough of it. Every book, and person I met meant that I could grow in what I thought was knowledge and power.  I started buying books, and writing my favorite things down in a Book of Shadows.  It really meant nothing.  I was going through the motions of what I thought was the right way to go but it was shallow because my growth was not from knowledge of the subjects I was studying.  If you were to ask me what half of it meant I couldn’t really tell you.  I was really good at the “This is what Witches are not” conversation but not so good at what Witches are.  There was a certain depth that was missing and so was true magic also missing.  The first two goals of the witch are 1. Know yourself, and 2. Know your craft.  I knew I wanted to be a witch but although I had gathered the proper information, I did not know my craft because I didn’t feel it and had little familiarity.

Own what you want to know and make it yours.  Don’t just right down the definitions and correspondences, live them.  Meditate over the true meanings and how they move you.  Only when you do this will you truly gain understanding and broaden your knowledge of such things. It is a journey that may mean hardship, but your magic will reap the benefits.

What the Tarot says about Knowledge: A Single card pull from the Tarot

Eight of Swords.  Do not be confined to your current skill set.  You must strive to know the things you do not know.

Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance. – Confucius

As we step from the field of flowers you ground yourself on the tiny gravel stones of the small walkway.  Your feet feel lighter as we continue down the path.  Just ahead is a hill.  “Just ahead is learning to apply the knowledge you have.”  You wonder about what is ahead but is yet unknown.

Sneezes, New Tarot Spread, Lamb, and the Kitchen Sink

I generally like to keep my postings short, and to the point but this one might be very different.  There is so much I need to catch up on and that I need to get off my chest.  I might come back later and add a Table of contents to help the reader wade through the fluff. I bet if you read my last post you are wondering a couple of things.  Well the answer is yes, or 42.

Actually last weekend was pretty awesome.  I went to an Imbolc ritual held by Rose Hollow coven and it was breathtaking.  It was just so overwhelming to meet so many nice people.  They were all very down to earth and genuine.  We were able to sit down with the members, and seekers before hand and talk about life.  There was laughter and merriment, and a tiny bit of drinking.  It felt comforting to just be myself around other people.  It is a feeling that I am really not use to.  We held ritual which was a first for me.  Not that it was my first ritual, but certainly my first with a coven or group of people.  I wont reveal what was said or even the outline but I will say a couple of things about it.  I went into this very open.  I had all day to prepare and it was constantly on my mind, which I think helped get some nerves out of the way.  For the item I had to bring I decided to take along a Tarot Card.  I choose the Ace of Wands.  It seemed like the best choice since I really wanted to find a symbol that had something to do with my business and creativity.

I still was getting over “first meeting jitters”.  Usually it takes me an awfully long time to open up to people. Sometimes years, which I believe leads to this misunderstanding that I am pretentious or snobbish.  Honestly I am just shy and lack social grace.  I find it hard within a large group to really let go.  It is second nature to me that when I go out into public to really close off psychically, probably for self defense.  I also tend to be a pretty even tempered person.  Meaning I don’t get over excited or under excited, I always try and keep my emotions intact to avoid unraveling when things don’t go my way.  This is a problem during ritual.  I should be happy and let loose.  I  hope that this is something I will be able to overcome as I spend more time with Rose Hollow.  It is ok to laugh and be merry and dance and act super goofy.

I feel good about the night as a whole though.  I know because my body told me so.  Something weird always happens to me when I am raising power.  I has been an indicator to me of when I am raising really large amounts of power.  I have to sneeze.  When I am raising power I have to sneeze.  During the ritual last Sat. I was trying very hard not to sneeze so I am happy that I was able to, even though I was a little uncomfortable, raise a decent amount of energy.  What about the readers?  Do any of you have weird things that happen when you raise energy for spell-work?

I have discovered that I have a sensitivity to Lamb.  The HP had prepared an awesome lamb dish for afterritual.  It was simply stunning but did not set well with me.  It is a problem that I thought I might have so I ate very little, but honestly I have never been in the situation to test.  I have had lamb in the past, and felt bad.  Each time however, I was eating a food that I have never had before so I couldn’t be sure it was the lamb or the other ingredients and preparation of that lamb.  My sincere compliments to the Chef.

So I got a request for a Tarot Reading from someone very close to me.  I wont say much about the reading but you can check it out here.  The reading did bring up a very interesting situation when reading for someone you know well.  Usually I don’t do readings for people who are really close friends or people I know well.  I find it hard if not in the right frame of mind to separate intuition from personal bias.  There are things about the person that you know that may cloud your interpretation.  Although part of me believes that knowing more may lend itself to a better interpretation of the cards.  What do the readers think?  Is knowing someone very well a reason to stay away from reading tarot for them?  What are possible pitfalls to this process?

Check out the Book of Shadows Section which has been updated recently.  I hope to add some more music soon, so stay tuned.

Finally, please send your kind thoughts for me and my wife.  She found out today the she is being laid off.  Her employer, my brother, is not sure that he can afford her anymore so he might have to let her go.  This did not come as good news, although me being the eternal optimist is hoping for the best.  Sweetheart if you are reading this, I love you and will always be here for you.

Blessed Be

New Tarot Spread – Robin Wood

So I finally did a spread with the Robin Wood deck.  It is to answer the question I asked in my last post.  I did only a small 3 card reading tonight, mostly based off of my time restraints with it being after midnight and all.

Here is the Original Post with the question

Here is the Robin Wood reading.

Pagan Podcasts and New Tarot Spread

So I had a rare opportunity to help someone recently.  They had contacted me through the blog here to give them a Tarot reading.  This was really such a positive experience.  It is just nice to connect with someone and be able to provide some guidance.  I would love to do more.  The process I don’t think is very unique.  The person sent me their name, birth date, and a question.  I then do a little research on the birth date and sign and then take that information along with the question and meditate for a bit over everything.  I do this while shuffling the cards and then when they tell me that it is time I stop shuffling and deal the spread.  A bit take raising power for spell work by the time the cards are dealt I feel overwhelmed with emotion like my aura is on fire.  Check it out here.

So I have totally jumped on board with Pagan podcasts.  By far my favorite would be The Wigglian Way with Mojo and Sparrow.  Here is there website.  Also you can follow the link in the sidebar.  I’ll list my other favorites as I run across really good one, although it will be hard to follow up those Wigglians.  To check out some other great pod kin check out The Pagan Podcast Index here, or check them out in the sidebar.

Hope to get in another post before the weekend is out.  It should be pretty low-key so I’ll have some down time.  It will be good rest after a crazy busy week.   Next week my business is taking on 3 or 4 new clients so I will be busy pushing paperwork and making trips to the bank.  Towards the end of the week I am meeting with the High Priestess on a local Coven called Rose Hollow.  My wife and I have recently been searching out a coven to finds some like friends and add a new dimension to our faith.   I think my next post should be about how I came to the craft.  Until then, Blessed Be.

Tarot Spread and Holiday catch up.

Merry Meet all.  Be sure to check out the latest spread I did over in the Tarot Readings section.  It was an eye opener, but it will give readers a good sense of what my tarot spread is like.  I feel most comfortable in a reading that centers itself on the current situation of the subject being read.  How they got to that point, how the past is affecting them now, how the current situation is affecting the future and what that future looks like.  It also includes their current fears and how things might turn out if they continue down the current path or Fate.  Click here to visit the Readings page.

This spread I did for myself.  It really reminded me of this recent change in my level of spirituality and where that is going.  It really re-affirmed what the last few weeks have meant to me.  It also included a wonderfully mysterious warning for the future.  The cards unfold in mysterious ways.

Speaking of unfolding, my holidays wrapped up quite nicely.  I am back at home and in full swing.  I feel well grounded and have so many projects to work on which I will keep you updated on.  Music, finding a coven, expanding this blog, spiritual growth, etc…  Rest assured I will be posting some of my music once I get a decent recording.  I have been meaning to learn some tunes from Hugin the Bard’s “A Bard Book of Pagan Songs.”  I am also in the process of making a new Athame and will post those pictures when I am through.  I am also excited to share my library with you and post the story of how I found paganism… whew!  I feel busy, but focussed.

For now enjoy the Reading and I get to work to knock out this list of mine.  Blessed Be.

Self Card

I believe that everyone has a Tarot card that most represents them. Mine would be the Knight of Cups.

Description:
A graceful knight rides a white horse. Despite being in full armor, the knight seems to move slowly and steadily along his journey. His helmet has wings, and his cloak has images of fish. His right hand extends a cup, holding it gently before him. The horse appears to be calm. In the distance, a river cuts through the land.

Meanings: Bringer of ideas and opportunities, artistic, amiable, enthusiastic, moral, a dreamer, great expectations, an arrival or a departure, changing.

Reversed Meanings: Treachery, manipulation, deceit, dishonesty, double-dealing, excessive ambition, facade, ruthlessness, recklessness.

What is yours? Why?

My spread

This is a spread that I came up with about 10 years ago.  I have yet to name it.  Suggestions would be duly noted.  It is the spread that I use the most and am most comfortable with.  If you would like a Tarot Reading email wiccantarot@gmail.com
